European tech funding hits €27.8bn in Q3 2026, led by five billion-euro rounds
Funding rose 32.4% year on year, but a handful of mega-rounds in AI, cloud and defence took a large share of the money.

European tech companies raised €27.8 billion across 732 deals in the third quarter of 2026, according to Tech.eu's quarterly data published on 21 October. That is 32.4 percent more than the €21 billion raised in Q3 2025, and more than two and a half times the €11 billion recorded in Q3 2024.
The headline number looks like a strong recovery for European venture funding. The detail shows a market that is increasingly concentrated in a few very large rounds, a few sectors and a few countries.
Five rounds above €1bn
Tech.eu counted five deals of more than €1 billion in Q3, involving four companies: Mistral AI (€3 billion), Nscale (two rounds of about €2.95 billion and €2.59 billion), Helsing (€1.58 billion) and Quantum Systems (€1.05 billion). Together those five deals add up to roughly €11.2 billion, about two-fifths of the quarter's total.
Nscale stands out. Including a further €787 million financing in July, the AI infrastructure company raised about €6.3 billion during the quarter alone, according to the data.
The timing was uneven too. July was strong and August weaker, a familiar summer pattern, but Tech.eu says the scale of the September surge sets 2026 apart from previous years.
Beyond the five billion-euro rounds, deal sizes fall considerably, Tech.eu says, which means a relatively small number of large transactions captured a substantial share of the capital deployed. Put another way, the other 727 deals in the quarter shared around €16.6 billion between them.
AI and cloud take almost half
By sector, AI companies raised €6.7 billion and cloud companies €6.4 billion in Q3. Together that is more than €13 billion, or around 47 percent of all capital raised in the quarter. Defence and dual-use technology also featured at the very top, with Helsing and Quantum Systems among the billion-euro rounds.
The UK, Germany and France dominate
UK-based tech companies raised almost €12 billion across 188 deals, about 43 percent of the European total. Germany ranked second with about €4.9 billion across 114 deals, and France third with €4.0 billion from 49 deals. Together, the three countries attracted nearly three-quarters of all capital raised in Q3.
More than 2,630 investors took part in Q3 deals, with Innovate UK the most active investor by deal count, Tech.eu reports.
A two-year rebound
The longer view is striking. Q3 2024 saw €11 billion raised, Q3 2025 €21 billion, and Q3 2026 €27.8 billion. Tech.eu describes this as a strong rise in capital deployed over the past two years. Much of that rise has come from AI, AI infrastructure and defence companies raising at a scale that European venture markets rarely saw before.
What it means for European founders
For most founders, the €27.8 billion headline overstates how easy it is to raise. Mega-rounds for a small group of AI, cloud and defence companies lift the total, while a typical seed or Series A founder competes for a much smaller pool. The concentration in the UK, Germany and France also means founders elsewhere in Europe often need to build investor relationships across borders.
There are signs that the growth-stage gap is getting attention. This week, the EQT-managed Scaleup Europe Fund led Pigment's $250m Series E, Spanish investor Seaya launched a €600m growth fund, and Legora raised $550m at an $8.8bn valuation.
